Menus & navigation (WordPress)

Setting up the main menu

  1. In WordPress, go to Appearance → Menus.
  2. Create a menu (or choose an existing one), and tick the pages you want under

Pages, then press Add to Menu.

  1. Drag the items into the order you want.
  2. Under Menu Settings → Display location, tick Primary menu.
  3. Press Save Menu.

If you imported the demo, this is already done with a menu called *Meridian primary*.

Until a menu is set as the Primary menu, the header simply lists your pages.

Adding your booking and voucher pages

Your booking page and gift voucher page are not ordinary WordPress pages, so they do not appear under Pages on the Menus screen. Look for the Meridian pages box instead, tick Book or Gift vouchers, and press Add to menu.

They only appear there once they have something to offer: Book once you have a session people can book, and Gift vouchers once voucher amounts are set and payments are set up.

Dropdown menus

The theme allows one level of dropdown — a parent such as Info holding Experience, Services and Testimonials. This keeps the top row short as a site grows.

To put an item in a dropdown, drag it slightly to the right underneath its parent on the Menus screen. It then shows as sub item. Press Save Menu.

One level is a deliberate limit. Deeper menus are hard to use on a phone, and the header cannot lay them out.

How the dropdown behaves

It opens when a mouse hovers over it, when it is tapped on a touch screen, and when someone reaches it with the keyboard; Escape closes it.

On a phone, everything moves into the menu that slides out from the side, where dropdown items are simply indented underneath their parent — there is room, so nothing is hidden.

Header layout

  1. Go to Meridian Photographers → Settings, on the Appearance tab.
  2. Under Layout, choose a Header style: name left with the menu on the

right, name centred with the menu beneath, name and menu stacked on the left, or name only with the menu behind a button.

  1. Press Save Changes.

This is separate from your style kit, so you can change one without the other.

The footer's words

On Meridian Photographers → Settings, on the Appearance tab, under Footer, every line of the footer can be changed: the name and the words under it, whether to list your pages and your contact details and their headings, A column of your own (for example opening hours or an Acknowledgement of Country), the Copyright line and the Footer line. Clear a box to leave that line out. Needs theme 1.9.3 or later.

The header over your opening photograph

On Meridian Photographers → Settings, on the Appearance tab, under Header, Over the opening photograph chooses Clear (the photograph shows through the header while the page is at the top) or Solid (always on its own background). Either way the header gets a background as soon as the visitor scrolls, so the menu can always be read. Needs theme 1.9.3 or later.

Protecting your photographs

On the same tab, under Protecting your photographs:

  • Discourage saving photographs and copying the page turns off right-click and long-press saving, dragging photographs off the page, selecting and copying, and the shortcuts for viewing the page's source, saving it, printing it and opening the developer tools. Photographs disappear for a moment when a computer's screenshot keys are pressed and are left out when the page is printed.
  • Watermark the photographs on your site puts your mark into the photographs your pages show, so a saved copy or a screenshot carries it. Choose the Watermark words, Where it sits, How visible and the Size. Your Media Library is not changed: the theme makes marked copies in a meridian-marked folder inside your uploads, the first time each one is needed, and points your pages at them. Your logo and site icon are never marked.

No website can stop a phone's own screenshot buttons, a camera pointed at the screen, or someone opening the browser's own View Source menu; the watermark is what still protects the photograph then.

The footer menu

On Appearance → Menus, tick Footer menu under Display location for the menu you want in the footer, and press Save Menu. The footer shows only top-level items, not dropdowns. If you leave it unset, the footer reuses your primary menu.
