Using the blocks (WordPress)

Every Meridian block appears under Meridian Photographers in the WordPress block inserter.

Adding a block

  1. Edit any page and press the + button.
  2. Scroll to Meridian Photographers, or type the block's name (for example

Hero or Portfolio grid) in the search box.

  1. Click the block to add it.

Meridian's blocks are drawn by the theme each time the page loads. That means a theme update improves every page you have already built, and you never see WordPress's "this block contains unexpected or invalid content" message.

Editing a block

Select the block and open the settings panel on the right (the gear icon at the top right of the editor, if it is closed). Everything for that block is there, under the block's name.

The page in the editor shows the block as it will really look, and updates as you change its settings. Press Preview to see the whole page as a visitor will.

Starter layouts

Ready-made stacks of blocks for common pages:

  1. Edit a page and press +.
  2. Open the Patterns tab and choose Meridian layouts.
  3. Click a layout to insert it.

They include home pages (classic, signposted and a one-page site), an about page, the experience of working with you, investment, sessions and services, contact, a landing page and a thank-you page. Nothing is locked: change, move or remove any block afterwards. The photograph spaces start empty, so you fill them with your own work.

Italic words in headings

In most headings, put asterisks around a word to set it in italic — that is how the mixed upright-and-italic headlines are made. For example, Days worth remembering properly.

Photographs

Photograph settings use the ordinary WordPress media library. Press Choose to pick, Change to swap and Clear to remove. For blocks with several photographs, the order you select them in is the order they appear.

Portfolio and journal blocks

The Portfolio grid and Journal list blocks fill themselves in. You do not list items by hand: add a collection under Portfolio or publish a post, and it appears wherever those blocks are.

The flex canvas — putting things where you want them

When no ordinary block fits — words over a photograph, overlapping images, a shape running off the edge — the Flex canvas block gives you a blank surface and lets you place things freely.

Add it like any other block, then press Open the designer on it. When you are finished, press Save canvas, then Update (or Publish) to save the page.

Read the flex canvas guide

It is the same designer as on the hosted plans, and a block designed in one opens correctly in the other.
